If you are now expecting to read a list of health enhancing benefits answering the why meditate
question, then you will be disappointed. Save that for Google and all the other meditation and
mindfulness sites. These days there is so much neuroscience research going on revealing different
aspects of our brain activity and stress response that you can probably find a study that provides
reasons to meditate to improve almost any aspect of life. So yes, that’s how good the benefits are, I
have listed some on this page here but what’s most important is for you to discover your personal
reason, your own why meditate? Without this strength of conviction to keep you going, your good
intentions are going to easily slide.
For example we all know about the benefits of healthy eating but how often do we have an extra
glass of wine, say yes to dessert when we’re trying to fight the bulge, or binge on carbs instead of
salad?

So why do you Meditate?
Personally I meditate because I enjoy the stillness. I enjoy the feeling that I don’t have to talk to
anyone, listen to anything, watch anything, be in front of a computer screen or media. I enjoy that, I find it a relief whereas others might find that aspect uncomfortable, frightening or just plain weird.
I enjoy just being, hanging out with myself and seeing what comes up. Often this is frustration,
anger, sadness, boredom, indifference, so it’s not always easy but I find it fascinating to observe
what comes up. Even when my mind wanders (which of course it does!) and I discover myself lost in a memory, a to-do list or a future event I still find it remarkable that my mind has a mind of its own and is determined to do its own thing despite my best intentions.
I enjoy breathing and being in my body. It feels good! And when I become aware of all that tension that I am holding within my body – wow it feels amazing to just let it go.
Does it sounds so awful to admit that I am a nicer person because I meditate?
When I give myself the time daily to connect with myself, my body, my breathing and nothingness with no particular goal other than to just be, I actually find I have MORE time for others. What is more, many of life’s annoying challenges don’t get me so worked up. I gain a new perspective somehow. And I actually prefer this meditation me rather than the enraged, stressed-out, frustrated and grumpy me that has been known to storm through life.
When we are able to rest the mind, we can be fully present to life and in this way we see and experience so much more that we may have previously missed. Making authentic connections is easier because we are present and aware. I find it much easier to connect with and have a relationship with nature now that I meditate regularly and I enjoy the connection that meditation brings, not only with myself, or sense of self but with something far greater. There a real discovery of self which goes on for me, like realising the person I have been hanging out with all this time is some being that I don’t really know that well at all. So this is fascinating, revealing and life changing. Also and just as important is a sense of connection to the world around me.
Meditation is the first step towards getting to know yourself, connecting with your intuition, getting in touch with your heart’s desires and enabling you to set goals which mean something to you. It’s an absolute essential if you are seeking something more from life and something greater from yourself. So that’s my motivation, now what about you?
